Trust & Safety Coffee Chats are one-on-one conversations designed to provide mentorship to current and aspiring trust and safety professionals. Hosts are volunteering their time and expertise to offer advice to job seekers and T&S professionals.

How It Works:

• Search for a host based on what you want to talk about.
• Sign-up using the host’s “Schedule a chat” button.
• Come prepared with questions and have a specific goal in mind.

Friendly Reminders:

• Be respectful of our hosts and their time. If you book time with a host, please show up or cancel the booking in advance if the time no longer works for you.
• The TSPA Code of Conduct applies to all resources, spaces, and programming, even if you’re not a TSPA member.
• If you’re just getting started in T&S and want to learn more, we recommend reviewing Careers in T&S and the T&S Curriculum before scheduling.
• Hosts are not conducting formal interviews, offering referrals, providing product feedback, participating in interviews and/or user research, and/or acting on behalf of their employers or TSPA. If you schedule time and you’re not a current or aspiring T&S professional, a host reserves the right to cancel the appointment without notice.

I’ve spent the last 10 years in “big” tech, with tenures at Meta, Twitch (Amazon), and Pinterest- and at least 8 of those years working on user safety and content compliance. Things I like to talk about:

• Product and design thinking; particularly for moderation tools, user reporting tools, user accounts controls, objectionable content suppression, ML for safety.
• Metrics baby! Do you have prevalence measurements? Most of us don’t, so what kind of metrics should we index on to know your product/process is doing the most it can.
• Tools at scale; for vendors, for employers, for users. What things to consider so you can build a modular system that can grow with your user base and adapt to changing requirements.
• Cross-functional collaboration and relationships (Ops, eng, product, content, design, UX, policy, legal, TPM, workforce management– you name it, I’ve probably worked with them)
• Compliance without the compromise of user experience.
• Coming from unconventional career paths (before tech, I was in hospitality); and how to think about framing your experience in T&S in a more generalized term to land you broader career opportunities. (if that’s what you want).
• How awesome dogs are.
• Your general hype person.
