Join us for an “Ask Me Anything” session about working in trust and safety. The T&S field is hot, and companies are hiring! But how do you know if you have the right experience or qualifications? What’s it like working in trust and safety, and actually–what does “trust and safety” even mean? This virtual event is open to everyone and features TSPA advisor Dona Bellow and TSPA community member Christine Lehane, who will answer questions based on their years of experience as T&S professionals. Dona is a Content Policy Lead, and Christine is a Research Manager working in Integrity UX Research. Registration is required.

That Escalated Quickly: What It’s Like to Work in T&S

Trust and Safety is a vast field, with various functions and responsibilities. A T&S professional could be moderating content, writing policy, building products, responding to government requests, measuring quality assurance, and doing so much more. Those who work in T&S also come from diverse backgrounds.

In this series, TSPA brings to you fireside chats with TSPA members about their careers. We’ll explore the diversity and breadth of those doing this work. We’ll talk about what they do, how they got into trust and safety, and what advice they would give to those wanting to do the same thing they do.

October host and guest: Patrick Earley & Adelin Cai

Patrick currently is the Lead Policy Manager for the Trust & Safety policy team at the Wikimedia Foundation. He specializes in anti-harassment initiatives and community-driven policy making, working with the hundreds of thousands of people around the world who volunteer their time to build Wikipedia and other free knowledge repositories. Prior to working in Trust & Safety, he has worked in film production, libraries, wildfire protection and other oddly disparate fields. Patrick also volunteers his time as a Wikipedia administrator and works with his local immigrant support society to help newcomers to my region. He is based in British Columbia, Canada.

Adelin is an online content policy and tech operations expert who’s spent over a decade working with and leading teams responsible for product policies and their enforcement. She has deep experience in both operational work and people management. She was Pinterest’s former Head of Policy, and prior to Pinterest, she ran Twitter’s Legal Ads Policy team, guiding policy and operations for Twitter’s self-serve and international advertising products. Adelin is also a co-founder of the Trust & Safety Professional Association (TSPA) and the affiliated Trust & Safety Foundation (TSF). She currently serves as TSPA’s board chair.

TrustCon 2022

TSPA will be hosting its very first global conference, TrustCon, September 27-28, 2022. This will be the very first (that we know of) global conference for trust and safety conference, brought to you by your trust and safety peers. While the focus of the conference will be on the work of trust and safety, we encourage participation from all sectors, including government, research, and civil society.

To ensure that all of our members get to participate (even if you can’t join us in person), TrustCon will be a hybrid conference with the in-person portion taking place in Palo Alto, CA and a virtual component taking place in EMEA and APAC-friendly timezones.

There will be more information to come, including calls for presentations and exhibits and sponsorship opportunities. So, save the date, and stay tuned for more!

Meeting in the Middle: Creating a Universal Code of Conduct with a Global Member Community

In 2021, the Wikimedia Foundation (WMF), the nonprofit that administers Wikipedia and its companion projects (e.g, Wikimedia Commons, Wikidata, Wikivoyage), launched its first ever Universal Code of Conduct. This Code expands existing policies and outlines the kinds of behaviors that are and are not acceptable across more than 700 sites. Remarkably, more than 1,500 volunteers from 19 different projects representing five continents and 30 languages participated in drafting the Code. Join us for a member presentation by Patrick Earley, Lead Policy Manager, Trust & Safety, to learn more about how his team collaborated with a global member community of contributors and what comes next. August host and guest: Jerrel Peterson + Cathryn Weems

Cathryn Weems is the Senior Director of Legal Policy at Twitter. She’s worked in tech for over 20 years, and in Trust & Safety since before it was called Trust & Safety. She’s worked at Yahoo!, YouTube, Dropbox and Twitter over her career and her experience has mostly been focused on legal operations, policy development, child safety, and management.

Jerrel Peterson has spent his career leveraging research and strategic partnerships to address complex social and political issues. He is currently a Director on the Trust & Safety team at Spotify and previously served as the Head of Safety Policy for Twitter. He worked cross functionally to resolve dozens of high-profile cases weekly, drive the development of policies, processes, and tools, and communicate Twitter’s content policies clearly and objectively to internal and external stakeholders. Prior to Twitter, Jerrel worked in public policy at the state and federal level and also spent a few years providing direct services to various marginalized communities within the U.S.

Those who work in T&S also come from diverse backgrounds. Some worked as teachers, civil servants, lawyers, or other fields before making the jump into trust and safety. Some may have only worked for 1 or 2 companies for 10+ years, while others may have worked for half a dozen companies, from large international companies to small startups.

In the next few months, TSPA will be bringing to you a series of fireside chats with TSPA members about their careers. We’ll explore the diversity and breadth of those doing this work. We’ll talk about what they do, how they got into trust and safety, and what advice they would give to those wanting to do the same thing they do. Join us, starting in June for these intimate conversations about what it’s like to work in trust and safety.
