Reading Between the Reporting Lines: Org Structures for Trust and Safety Teams

This TSPA members only panel will explore an under-discussed but critically important topic: where Trust & Safety fits within a company’s overall organizational structure and how it impacts the team’s effectiveness, culture, and the company’s products and services. Depending on the company, T&S may sit within the Product team, the Legal team, Operations team, Information Security team, or elsewhere. The panel will discuss various models of how T&S is positioned within a company, the trade-offs of different organizational choices, and factors that may influence the decision to place a T&S team in a particular reporting line.

So, You Wanna Work in Trust and Safety in EMEA?

The trust and safety field has grown dramatically over the past few years and technology companies are hiring for trust and safety roles in greater numbers than before. However, because trust and safety is still a relatively new field, titles and roles are called different things across different companies, required skill level and experience are not as transparent or clear, and if job applicants don’t have experience in tech or in trust and safety, it can be an intimidating process. In this panel discussion, we’re going to focus on answering your basic T&S hiring questions, specifically for the Europe, Middle East, and Africa (EMEA) region.

The QA Q&A

Google’s Trust & Safety recently published a Whitepaper on Quality Assurance in Spam, Fraud, and Abuse Fighting. In the whitepaper, Google’s Scaled Ops Quality team discusses its learnings to date in this space and provides insight into how they try to most effectively and efficiently evaluate the quality of manual reviews performed by trust and safety agents, including the quality process, metrics, and sampling.

During this member presentation and roundtable discussion, the authors of the paper will present a high-level overview of its content. Afterwards, the participants can ask questions (to the authors and each other), share their own learnings and wins, and have a discussion on quality assurance with fellow practitioners.

From Russia, with Lag

Governments around the world have varying levels of concerns about what their citizens are saying — and seeing — online, and they expect tech platforms to remove what they don’t want to see. Some governments pass new laws and regulations; some governments don’t allow companies to operate in their countries if companies don’t follow their rules. One government — Russia, in this case — took a new tack, by slowing everything down. Unhappy with Twitter for not complying with its takedown requests, the Russian Government decided to slow down Twitter in Russia, making downloading and uploading images and videos very slow. Join our next Case Study Club, where we’ll be talking about Russia throttling Twitter and other government actions that forces tech platforms to comply with takedown requests.

The pandemic has pushed many of us to the limits of coping, across all areas of life. For trust and safety professionals, personal impacts of managing the effects of the pandemic are compounded by the challenging nature of our work — including new and increasingly more complex trust and safety issues, taking this very difficult work into our homes, and losing in-person peer support.

As we come to the end of 2021, we want to take some time to pause and reflect on our own wellbeing needs and give space to normalize the effects of the pandemic on our subsequent wellbeing, as well as re-align ourselves to what really matters to us in life.
