Apple has always promoted itself on protecting its customers’ privacy, promising its customers that they have full control over the privacy of their devices – and no one, not even Apple, can see it. This shifted when Apple announced plans to roll out new child safety features in its iOS15 update, including features that will detect child sexual abuse material (CSAM) on devices and iCloud. This prompted an avalanche of critique by privacy advocates.
