The Integrity Investigations and Intelligence (i3) team is dedicated to protecting the users of the Facebook family of applications (e.g. Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, Oculus) from dangerous organizations and individuals, human trafficking and exploitation, and crimes against children; the worst kinds of threats we experience. We are a mission driven team with a passion for protecting people. We are seeking an experienced Threat Investigator to deeply understand and mitigate how child sexual abuse and exploitation manifest on our family of apps, in addition to investigating complex threats, advancing investigative methods, and using innovative research approaches to prevent harm to children on our platforms.

Threat Investigator, Child Safety Responsibilities

  • Develop a deep understanding of how bad actors use and target the abuse and exploitation of children on Facebook and its Family Of Applications and Services (FOAS)
  • Investigate complex cases to understand in granular detail how abuse is occurring and attribute the person(s) responsible. Identify enforcement strategies to mitigate harm both in the current case and from similar forward-looking abuse
  • Analyze and interpret large datasets to advance investigations, quantify trends or support findings
  • Identify effective strategies to prevent or disrupt abuse at scale and consult on mitigations to effect those strategies
  • Proactively identify for currently undetected abuse by leveraging internal data, open-source intelligence and third party private intelligence
  • Inform the company’s understanding of previously unidentified threats and trends through the production of strategic and tactical intelligence, and its dissemination to the appropriate audiences
  • Work on projects with cross functional teams to collaborate on product changes that make the Facebook family of apps safer for children and more difficult for bad actors to exploit
  • Address sensitive content issues, including but not limited to graphic images, videos and writings, offensive or derogatory language, and other objectionable material
  • Prioritize and execute with minimal direction or oversight

Minimum Qualifications

  • 2+ years experience investigating and acting on digital crimes and internet-enabled abuse against children (such as intelligence, online investigations, cyber security, international geopolitical, or human rights functions, etc.) with 5+ years total experience in working in the broad field of online safety or digital crimes/abuse
  • Proven experience analyzing and mitigating high-impact threats and online threat actors
  • Experience contributing to tactical and strategic finished intelligence on abusive actor behaviors and activities
  • Experience with data analysis tools and techniques, such as but not limited to SQL and successful application of data to inform decision making
  • Experience quantifying and qualifying assessments and investigations into clear and concise intelligence and/or recommendations
  • Proven track record of managing and executing on short and medium term projects such as on call rotations and intelligence production as well as long-term projects such as victim support initiatives, behavioral detection efforts, large intel projects or technology product changes
  • Experience conceptualizing, drafting, and presenting tactical and strategic finished intelligence on abuse areas that result in measurable change

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with open source investigation techniques and familiarity with a variety of internet research tools
  • Experience within fast-paced multinational environments
  • Experience to work with a team spanning multiple locations/time zones
  • Experience to juggle multiple priorities in a dynamic and changing environment
  • Experience to think critically and qualify assessments with solid communications skills
  • Proven track record of managing and executing on short term and long term projects
  • Proficiency with a second language
  • Specific regional subject matter expertise on child sexual abuse and exploitation in emerging areas (such as MENA, SEA and Africa)
  • Expertise in the online safety space and protecting vulnerable populations
  • Experience in child safety investigations for a multinational agency or technology company spanning multiple jurisdictions and crime types
  • BS/MS or equivalent experience in Computer Science, Information Systems, Intelligence Studies, Cybersecurity, Criminal Justice, or related field
