The Policy Analytics, Research & Experience team enables, facilitates, and streamlines integrated data-driven decision making across the Trust Policy & Partnership organization. The team is committed to operational excellence and community experience through a culture of problem-solving, guided by data and research. About you

  • You are passionate about solving complex problems with data; adding a new perspective to existing solutions and making business decisions based on careful and thoughtful analysis.
  • You are a storyteller who uses complex data and insights to frame narratives to bring others along the journey.
  • You are highly proficient in building and analyzing analytical frameworks, statistical models and experimentation methods to establish and communicate causal relationships.
  • You build and interpret algorithms that power data products.
  • Working knowledge of project/program management and You excel at collaboration, providing concrete guidance and constructive feedback to partner data scientists and analysts across the business to help improve the work.
  • You are able to execute projects with great complexity and a longer time horizon than is typical on most product teams. You can apply a sustained level of commitment and attention to your work, as well as thorough, thoughtful, and rigorous documentation to multi-week and often multi-month projects.

How you’ll make an impact

You will report directly to the Director of Business Analytics in Trust Policy & Programs, and partner closely with teams across the business to develop data-driven insights that promote anti-discrimination and equity for our host and guest communities. Working with the Anti-discrimination product team, you will both develop and support the creation of robust data insights through cross-functional partnerships, and will utilize and help to strengthen and improve the Project Lighthouse system. You will create data narratives and influence experimentation platforms to guide the seamless execution of new processes and systems, balancing the safety and expression needs of our community and business and operational challenges. In addition, you will leverage Airbnb’s rich and unique data, state-of-art machine learning infrastructure, and other central data science tools to build and grow the capacity within the organization. You will also be deeply involved in the technical details of the various systems we build, and will have the opportunity to collaborate with a strong team of engineers, product managers, designers and operations agents to achieve shared, cross-functional goals to help keep Airbnb’s community safe and trusted.

In this role you’ll get to

  • Use a combination of data engineering, science and analytics based skills to build the business insights platform to detect and support the mitigation of potential inequities across the Airbnb platform.
  • Perform data modeling for the various entities involved in Airbnb Trust including customers, hosts, cases, agents, and others using data modeling tools and frameworks to provide the analytical foundation of Airbnb’s anti-discrimination policy positions.
  • Conduct deep analysis into various operational areas including policy incubation, enforcement efficacy, prevalence, efficiency, agent tooling, staffing, and quality to identify and solve for operational bottlenecks and inefficiencies.
  • Blend external and internal data insights in order to inform policy positions and business impacts, within the anti-discrimination and equity context
  • Influence data-driven decisions across business verticals in day-to-day via business reviews, self-serve portal, planning scorecards, and impact analyses among others.
  • Influence experimentation & measurement strategies; conduct power analyses, define exit criteria, and use statistical models to improve inference. Your expertise in causal inference as well as passion for the subject matter will help you address this unstructured problem.
  • Utilize the Project Lighthouse system to collaborate with teams across the business to develop deep insights into potential inequities existing with the platform. Support the execution of Project Lighthouse audits with direct project management and consultative support.
  • Contribute to improvements to the work we started with Project Lighthouse, in close collaboration with product, engineering and operations teams. Your work will help ensure that every product team at the company is empowered with the insights necessary to address inequities within their features and surface areas, head-on — ultimately enabling us to build a platform experience that fosters true belonging amongst members of the Airbnb community.

We are looking for people who have

  • A minimum of 10+ years of experience in business analytics with an emphasis on operations scalability and optimization; and on developing business facing metrics and solving future business decisions.
  • Expert skills in SQL and expert in at least one programming language for data analysis (Python or R)
  • Experience with experimentation and machine learning techniques
  • Experience in schema design and high-dimensional data modeling
  • Demonstrated ability to create and drive technical roadmaps for the business, then seamlessly execute against them
  • Proven ability to tailor your recommended solutions to business problems to a cross functional team, with the ability to communicate clearly and effectively with cross functional partners of varying technical levels.
  • Have a positive and solution-oriented mindset; leads by example.
  • Strong time management and prioritization capabilities.
  • Absolute ability to maintain confidentiality and objectivity.

Preferred Experience

  • Experience with
    • distributed system optimization (e.g. Hadoop, Hive, Spark, Presto)
    • causal inference and structural models
    • prototyping and writing production code
  • Background working on issues of discrimination and bias.
  • Experience working within the product or policy development life cycle within technology, regulations, and/or industry landscape.
