We are looking for an experienced and empathetic functional manager who will help drive our mission of keeping Discord users safe by leading our mental health and wellness efforts through policy development, product counseling, and external partnership engagement.
What you’ll be doing
  • Identify and research new and emerging mental health and self-harm issues and
  • Consult on content policies to address mental health crises, including self-harm, body dysmorphia, anxiety, depression, and suicidal ideation with compassion and urgency.
  • Partner with Product to build more mental health and wellness promotion controls and response mechanisms.
  • Represent Discord to and build relationships with our external mental health, self-harm, and suicide prevention partners in civil society, government, the industry, and media.
  • Develop and communicate content, such as training, guides, and presentations, for engagement with external partners like teens, parents, and policymakers.
  • Respond and solve self harm, suicide, and mental health-related escalations from internal and external partners.
  • Articulate Discord’s values and mental health and wellness principles to product, design, engineering, and other internal stakeholder teams.
  • Embed yourself with our T&S specialized teams to understand emerging threats, identify patterns, and better detect mental health crises on Discord.

Potential exposure to sensitive or graphic content, including but not limited to vulgar language, violent threats, pornography and other graphic images.

What you should have
    • 4+ years experience working on self-harm, suicide prevention, and mental health promotion at a non-profit, community organization, government agency, or tech company.
    • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent education / experience
    • Passion for wellness and inclusive online spaces.
    • Experience engaging with those experiencing mental health crises, especially teenagers, and developing live and/or virtual programs to address harm and promote healing.
    • Experience researching mental health issues online and writing policies and recommendations to safeguard user experiences.
    • Experience working with suicide prevention and mental health organizations, governmental agencies, and policy makers to build safer experiences for children online.
    • Strong organizational and communication skills
    • Attitude of open-mindedness, collaboration, flexibility, and always questioning your assumptions.
